Rhode Island Chapter Outings

About the Outings

Once a month, the Rhode Island Sierra Club puts together a local, family friendly, and fun filled outing to the great outdoors. On these day trips, activities can include hiking in the state's beautiful parks, picnicking in historic town centers, and kayaking on the pristine watersheds around the Narragansett Bay. Please join us for one of these upcoming adventures. See you there!

Outings are open to club members, guests, & anyone else interested in getting outside.

We suggest a $3 members/$5 nonmenbers donation to help support the RI Sierra Club outings. Please contact Outings Leader Ben Jones with any questions or suggestions (outings@risierraclub.org or 401-598-6639).

Upcoming Outings:

Saturday, February 18, 2012 - Sunday/Monday February 19/20, 2012 - White Mountain Winter Wonderland Overnight Excursion

  • Join the RI Sierra Club on a overnight wintertime outing to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We will be using an Appalachian Trail shelter as our weekend headquarters to explore the trails. Bundle up and see the snowy (we hope) beauty of a New England winter in the mountains.
  • Meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 6am on Saturday to caravan. Travel time to the White Mountains is approximately 4-5 hours. Attendees will have the option of staying one or two nights, and will arrive back in RI late on the evening of the day they choose to head home. We will be staying in the Zealand Falls Hut, a hike in/hike out, heated Appalachian Trail shelter. Hut reservations are required in advance, so please contact Ben Jones (outings@risierraclub.org) if you are interested in attending. Accomidations will cost $44/night/person.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: this outing will be more strenuous then a typical RI Sierra Club outing and is not suitable for children.

Saturday, March 24, 2012 - The Flight of the Woodcock

  • Every year from March through May, the American Woodcock puts on a magnificent mating display. He sings a unique song while spiraling through the dusk sky, all to impress the local lady woodcocks in the region. See it for yourself by joining the RI Sierra Club on their annual outing to the Woodcock's South County mating grounds.
  • We will have two seperate sighting opportunities, one just before sunrise (6:41am) and the second just after sunset (7:03pm). For the dawn siting, meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 5:00am to caravan, or at the siting location trailhead near Matunuck Beach Road in Charlestown at 5:55am. For the dusk siting, meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 5:30pm to caravan, or at the siting location trailhead near Matunuck Beach Road in Charlestown at 6:15pm. Breakfast (cooked outdoors) will be served after the morning siting.
